"The Hartford Police Department strives to involve the citizen's we serve with insight and understanding of what policing in Hartford is all about. With this in mind, the Police Department offers a ten week Citizen 's Police Academy designed to impart each attendee with a basic understanding of what it takes to become and maintain a basic police certification in Wisconsin."
This innovative and interactive program takes attendee's through an orientation of the department and staff, education and training requirements, an overview of equipment and facilities, and hands-on demonstrations of police weapons and equipment. The program offers a relaxed atmosphere for interaction between our community members and officers that serve them.
The Citizen's Police Academy is open to adult City residents, and a select number of individuals who work and interact with the City on a daily basis. The Academy is conducted each year, beginning the end of August and is limited to 15 participants. The Academy hours are normally 6:30pm to 8:30p.m. one night each week, typically on a Wednesday.
There is no cost to attend the Academy.

Students learn how officers process a crime scene and handle evidence.
Use of Force Class;
Students learn what situations constitute use of force.
Vehicle Contacts Class;
Students learn how officers make vehicle stops and use professional communication.
Pursuit Driving Class;
Students learn Emergency Vehicle Operation, on a closed course.
M.I.L.O. Class;
Students learn firearms training, using a simulator.
DRE Class;
Students learn how to recognize drugs and drug paraphernalia from a drug recognition expert.
K-9 Presentation;
Students meet the Departments K-9 officers, watch a video presentation of how K-9 investigations are done and a see a demonstration of how Officer Cash sniffs out drugs.
Emergency Communications Center;
Students learn how police and support staff deal with emergencies.
Graduation;
Students are invited to attend a Graduation celebration, if they complete the course.

After Graduation
Toward the end of the course, you will be given the opportunity to join the Hartford Citizen's Police Academy Alumni Association.
Dues are only $15.00 per year, and the money is used to purchase items for the Police Department, help the Hartford Police Cadets and for Alumni events.
So, please remember your check book, or bring cash!
You are not required to join the HCPAAA in order to volunteer to help at events, Citizen's Police Academy graduates are also invited to help at events.
As a graduate of the Citizen Police Academy class, you will also have the opportunity to apply for a ride along with one of the Hartford Police officers.
